Perception

Hi Everybody! Welcome back for Chapter 2 which is Perception. Before we proceed with the readings. Let's play a game.

So how many blocks do you see?
Do you see three or four?

From these, we can actually see that everyone have different perceptions which lead to the different number of blocks seen.

So, what is perception

Perception is a continuous process of life. We, human does not share the same brain therefore we perceive things subjectively and differently.  It is also the impression that others give you and what you project to the others. Here's a video about why is perception so important in our daily life.

How do perception processes?

1. Sensory stimulation occurs
can be related to the sense or...

perceiving something meaningful and not perceiving something not meaningful.

2. Sensory stimulation is organised in (2) principle :

-Proximity ( closeness to each another)

eg: Yuan and Lok are best friends. Everywhere you go, you see them together. As time passes, you see them as one. Therefore, when Lok is not there with Yuan, you will automatically question, " Yuan, Where is Lok?"

-Closure ( a guess which is closely accurate)

3. Sensory stimulation is interpreted - evaluated
- Subjective process : involving evaluations on the part of the perceiver
- This does not depend only on the external stimulus but also your past experience, needs, wants and etc.

eg: What do you see in these pictures?

Find out and drop me comment on your answer!

4. Process Influencing Perception
It consists of (5) :

-Implicit personality concept
*your own opinion about someone's characteristics which leads to the other characteristics about the person.

For example :

What characteristics do you see from this girl?
She's dirty, messy , poor.
How about her?
She's pretty, professional,clean, well dressed.

From these experiment, you have actually practices this concept because the opinion you gave are influencing the next characteristics you name.

Halo Effect - When you think that they are good, you will only think of good traits about them.

Reverse Halo Effect - When you think that they are bad, you will only think that they are bad traits.

-Self-fulfilling Prophecy ( a.k.a) Pygmalion effect
* which  one make prediction and proceed to fulfill it.

- Primary-recency
* uses early information as a general idea of what a person is like then later information to make the idea more specific.

- Consistency
* We have  strong tedency to maintain balance or consistency among perceptions. We tend to expect certain things to go together and other things to not go together.

eg: I like a person and I will see all the characteristics I liked in that person. I hate the person and I will see all the characteristics I dislike in that person.

-Attribution
* process which you try to discover why people do what they do and why you do what you do.
* consists of (4) priniciple:
   - consensus : do they behave the same way as me?

   - consistency : do they repeat the same reaction in similar situation?

   - distinctiveness : do they react similarly in different situation?

   - controllability : is this person in his/her control of behaviour?

That's all for Chapter 2 ! * Clap clap*  HEHE :D Thank you for reading ! :) Stay tuned for moree !!
